Dr. Peggy Connell

Peggy Connell is Assistant Professor of Education and Director of Assessment for Educational Leadership, Orlean Bullard Beeson School of Education and Professional Studies, Samford University. Previously, Dr. Connell dedicated over 35 years in K-12 public education and served as a high school teacher, counselor, program specialist for staff development, director of curriculum and instruction, high school principal, chief academic officer, and superintendent.
She has served in diverse school environments including small to large size districts and schools; rural, suburban, and urban settings; and students from low to high poverty backgrounds. Dr. Connell has served in leadership roles at the local, district, state, and national levels. She has received numerous awards for her leadership service including the Georgia Association of Educational Leaders 2011 Professional of the Year Award, Georgia Association of Curriculum
and Instructional Supervisors 2010 Distinguished Service Award, Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia 2009 Woman of Distinction, Georgia School Superintendents Association 2004 Distinguished Service Award, and Alabama Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development 1998 Outstanding Educational Leadership Award. Dr. Connell has participated in educational reform initiatives through The Schlechty Center for Leadership in School Reform, Cornerstone Literacy, Inc., Southern Regional Educational Board (SREB), and Race to the Top. Under her eight-year tenure as Chief Academic Officer for Muscogee County School District a few of her accomplishments include the following: the high school graduation rate increased from below to above the state average; two schools received the National Blue Ribbon award; one high school and one elementary school were ranked number one or two in the state seven consecutive years; first district in the state to have International Baccalaureate schools at the elementary, middle, and high school levels; one of the first districts in the state to receive SACSCASI district accreditation; elementary reading scores increased from below to above the state average; and 95% of all school-age children in the district attended public schools.
